6TH BHAGWAN MAHAVIRA FELLOWSHIP TO STUDY PRAKRIT IN INDIA
A 9-month program (September 1, 2025 – May 31, 2026)
OBJECTIVE
To promote and build a cadre of serious scholars well versed in Prakrit – the Jain Agamic language.
THE PROGRAM
This program is highly subsidized by ISJS and JAFNA to attract the finest talents.
VENUE
The program will be held at ISJS c/o. Abhay Prabhavana, Parwadi, Maval, Pune, India.
DURATION
Nine (09) months, starting from September 1, 2025.
ELIGIBILITY
Doctorate / Post-graduate / Graduate in Philosophy / History / Indology / Languages / Linguistics / Religious Studies, across the globe, are eligible for this course.
DESIRABLE
The applicants with knowledge of Jain studies, Hindi, Sanskrit and Prakrit may be given preference. Ability to read and write Devanagari script is desirable.
MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION
English, with the help of Roman transliteration & English equivalents of Sanskrit and Hindi terms.

EXAMINATION & PERIODICAL TESTS
Written examination and viva-voce will be held at the completion of the course. Written and oral periodical test will be held at regular intervals during the course the course.

OUTLINE OF THE TEACHING CONTENT
- Introductory lectures (basics of Prakrit language)
- Prakrit grammar based on Hemachandra’s Siddha-hema-shabdanushasan
- Translation and grammatical analysis of selected texts of different Prakrit dialects
- Study of manuscripts, epigraphs with Devanagari transliteration and English translation
- Study of Apabhramsha grammar and literature
- Study of Brahmi script
